CONSULTATION AND ASSESSMENT
Consultation is a collaborative, problem-solving process, which is facilitated by Dr Newbury. The process aims to enable participants to work together to explore strengths and understand areas of difficulty, resulting in a greater understanding of a problem. Consultation can also support participants to uncover the next logical step and/or solutions to the problem.
Consultation is a staged approach to supporting a child or young person and typically involves the following stages:
Initial Consultation
We will meet together (parents, school staff and professionals) to discuss a child or young person's background, developmental history, strengths and areas of need. We may also agree possible solutions
at this stage.
Assessment
I will always seek the views of parents/carers, children and young people as part of my assessment. Assessment may also include; observation and activities or formal assessment such as cognitive assessment to identify strengths and areas of difficulty. Possible further consultation may take place at this stage to inform my assessments.
Feedback Consultation and Planning
I will always provide feedback following my assessments and usually produce a written summary of my involvement. Together, we will then develop a joint action plan detailing helpful strategies and approaches to meet identified areas of need.
Intervention
We will collaboratively agree intervention strategies to try at home, whole school/class approaches, group or individual sessions delivered by a member of school staff and/or direct therapeutic work with Dr Newbury as part of a 'plan-do-review' cycle.
